Beta Series: All-round mountain apparel | AR: All-Round. Lightweight & packable, waterproof GORE-TEX® Pro jacket; Hip length with a helmet compatible DropHood™
      DESCRIPTION
The streamlined Beta AR Jacket provides the backcountry minimalist with durable storm protection in a lightweight and packable format. This hip length GORE-TEX® Pro jacket reduces layering overlap and bulk, a helmet compatible DropHood™ offers quick storm protection, and reinforced shoulder and elbows survive alpine abuse.
      ALL AROUND

A mainstay in the Arc'teryx lineup since 2000, the Beta AR is the do everything, most versatile waterproof/breathable jacket for mountain environments. Hand pockets, athletic fit that accommodates layers and a hood with an internal collar mean comfort in storms, climbing, skiing or simply enjoying the outdoors.
      JUST THE RIGHT LENGTH

Hip length is the easiest to work with when layering waterproof/breathable garments. Not too short so it doesn't ride up or expose the lower back and not so long as to be cumbersome underneath a harness or a pack belt, the Beta AR hits the middle ground.
      THE HOOD

A good hood is a crucial detail on any serious alpine jacket. The Beta AR features the Arc'teryx DropHood™, a helmet-compatible, fast adjust hood with a separate collar for draft protection.
      THE KEY PIECE

The Beta AR is a solid, well-rounded piece. Durable, lightweight, with hand pockets and pit zippers for ventilation, it can manage storms, rock, snow and cool seasons. GORE-TEX® Pro delivers the highest level of waterproof/breathable performance.

This jacket is top quality and my daughter loves it! Price was great, the shipping was extremely fast. The only problem, the weather is starting to get warmer and she can't wear it as often, because it is so warm! Highly recommended.

I am 6'0" and 165 lb with 33 size waist and bought two Red colors in M and one Super Blue in L size to compare and chooe one. There is a bigger than expected size difference between the M and L sizes. I usually opt for the large in many jackets and tops I buy because I have very broad shoulders but lean body, but in this case the Large was bulky. It is very wide cut especially around the waist. It depends on how you want it to fit; Just as a rain jacket, the large is fine with room for a sweater or sweatshirt when it's cold I would choose the large for hiking. The Medium fit just right, looks good even for a casual wear with not much room for a bulky sweater but can wear a sweatshirt or long sleeve T-shirt under it for warmth. Mind you, all pictures were taken while wearing a t-shirt only. Also there is definitely a slight but noticeable cut difference BETWEEN THE TWO MEDIUM sizes I purchased caused probably by period of production and slight design changes that accompanied it. For starters the Rocket Red fit me more nicely with a slightly more room around the shoulders and wider overall cut and the mesh was softer and more fine. overall more comfortable to wear. The Mountain Red was a little snug around the shoulders and sides and the mesh is definitely coarser on my arms which is fine, but since I have broad shoulders I chose the Rocket Red. The Mountain Red had a solid polyester fabric right below the collar where the Columbia tag is for durability, but the Rocket Red was soft mesh all the way to the edge of the collar. Also the mesh interior is more fine and softer on the Rocket Red than the Mountain Red. Also the Blue one has fine soft mesh also and missing the collar solid polyester fabric. I would bet the Rocket Red is a discontinued product since it's not offered on Columbia.com as well as many of the colors offered here on Amazon. So I can assume the colors here that are not offered on Columbia's website are probably discontinued and will have a softer mesh and fit a little bit more loose or classic fit. I guess Columbia upgraded it to make it more durable around the neck area and fit more modern a little bit. I would also like to add about one other review that said quality defect in one pocket being sewn all the way to the hem but not the other pocket(Left pocket), IT IS NOT A QUALITY ISSUE, that pocket is where you pack the jacket. it has a two sided zipper, so you can turn the pocket inside out and pack the whole jacket inside, so it's intentionally sewn that way. All the three jackets I got where sewn like that. It will have a patch near the zipper pocket that says PACKABLE. Overall really nice quality jacket as to be expected from Columbia, and a steal on these prices, in stores it usually is twice.

I've had this jacket for a while, a bit over a year now, and this is definitely not a rain jacket. The jacket is waterproof only for very short periods of time. If I wear it in heavy rain walking from my car into my office building, by the time I get to my desk, a less than 2 minute trip total, water is already starting so soak through and the inside of the back of the jacket is starting to get damp. Unfortunately I discovered this well after the return window, but its basically been like this since the first time I wore it in rain, about 2 months after purchase.

Now, it never gets particularly soaked, but some water definitely permeates the jacket, and does so pretty quickly. Just to make sure it wasn't sweat and body humidity accumulating inside the jacket, I hung it on a chair, sprayed it down with a hose in the middle of the back, where there are no seams. After spraying I checked the inside was still dry, and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Coming back, it was damp inside. Putting the jacket on, it was damp enough I could feel the wetness on my back through the wicking polo shirt I had on almost immediately, but not so wet that my shirt looked wet when I took it off.

Despite being somewhat water permeable, it isn't very breathable.Wearing this jacket in pre-storm weather on a warm summer day will very quickly result in a lot of sweat accumulating inside the jacket.

This jacket is really more of a "water resistant, non breathable windbreaker" than anything else. Not impressed. I prefer my windbreakers to be much more breathable than this. I prefer my raincoats to be waterproof enough to stand in the rain for a half hour without getting wet. This jacket doesn't fit either.

Perhaps I got a bad one, as there are some reviews like mine, and others claiming it is waterproof. Maybe some waterproof coating gets sprayed on at the factory and they forgot mine. Whatever the case, this isn't really a raincoat.
